WATERPOLO UNDER 17s WIN DEVON CUP

Follow me
Having placed third in the Devon Under 17 Water Polo League this year, Barnstaple in a late season surge of form defeated champions Exeter 14-15 in the Knock Out Cup Semi final in late October to win a place in last night’s final against league runner’s up Paignton.
After one quarter the teams were evenly balanced at 3-2 but with Barnstaple attacking the deep end in the second quarter they raced into a 12-4 half time lead.
Within two minutes of the restart however captain and scorer of 8 of Barnstaple’s goals was ejected for the rest of the game as was Tom Hutchens leaving Barnstaple with no substitutes left and nearly half the game to play.
Paignton made the most of the situation clawing the score back to 15-11 going into the final quarter.
Barnstaple then rallied to score twice more giving them a comfortable cushion despite having to play a man down for the last two minutes when Connor Smith was ejected as well but with goalkeeper Nick Bull making several excellent saves they won 18-12 to receive the trophy for the first time in five years.

The day I represented Devon by Katie Holland

After getting picked to swim the 100 fly at Sheffield for Devon I was so happy, I had finally been selected after many years of wanting to swim for Devon.  The Devon team had 25 people in mainly swimmers coming from Plymouth, Kelly, Exeter and Newton Abbot so I was really pleased to get picked coming from a relatively small club. The 5 hour coach journey on the Saturday allowed for everyone to meet new people and make new friends. After our meal on the Saturday night the coaches gave us a motivational speech to get us prepared for fast swimming on Sunday. We all received badges for representing Devon which again gave everyone a boost and made us all feel proud to be representing our county.

We arrived at the pool early on Sunday morning all ready and prepared wearing our Devon kit with pride. When walking onto the swimming pool I was amazed at how big the pool was it was such a great opportunity to be racing here for the very first time. With over 1100 swimmers filling Ponds Forge the atmosphere was buzzing even before warm up had started.  After the warm up the open ceremony began introducing all the counties we would be up against.

Walking up for my race I was nervous as there was so many fast swimmers who had reached national level however I stayed focused and remembered everything Mark and Keith had told me in order to hit my national time.  Before I knew it I was on the block ready to race. I felt strong on the first 50 so went all out on the last 50 coming back on a time of 1.06.80 this was a two second PB for me so I was absolutely over the moon.  This was a national time however, as I am now youth I have to get it at a long course pool so I will be training hard to hit this at western counties or hopefully before.

Overall Devon came 5th narrowly missing out on getting promoted to division one as sadly we scored no points in the final relay due to a disqualification.

Representing Devon was such an amazing experience and a fantastic opportunity. I met some great people and learnt so many new things from both the swimmers and the coaches.

Three members of Barnstaple Swimming Club’s Water Polo Team recently represented Devon at the Under 14 championships in Manchester.
Bob Whittaker, Florence Moore and Milly Wordley were all selected after attending training sessions in Plymouth’s 50m pool.
The Girl’s Team did particularly well being undefeated until coming up against Greater Manchester in the final.   Milly was presented with “Most valuable player” by the GB goalkeeper Robyn Nicholls.
